How Solar Panels Work

How do solar cells actually work?

In this article I will briefly describe how the basic solar cell works and how you can make your own cell to help pay for your household electricity. Solar energy accounts for less than 1% of all energy produced in the western world. This is why we need to increase the amount of people who understand the science behind solar panels and hence can teach people how to build solar panels and how easy it can be to use the sun as an energy source.

The basic solar cell works in 3 steps. Step one, the sun rays are absorbed by a semi conductive material, this is what gives the shiny blue colour to many solar panels, this material is usually silicon. Step two simply put, is when the electrons gain energy allowing them to flow, this causes an electrical current. This is due to the composition of the panel. The final step is converting the electron electrical energy into everyday electricity (direct current electricity). This is done by a special converter.

There are many problems as to why there is not a panel on every roof in the country. The primary problem is that solar cells are expensive to make, the materials cost a lot and it used to be that only skilled professionals could put them together. But with the introduction of homemade guides, a lot more people are learning how to build panels. Another problem is that some of the energy from the suns rays is not absorbed by the solar cells, instead is reflected away. This makes the process less efficient, despite this having a solar panel will drastically reduce the amount of money you spend on your energy bills.

Solar panels are more of an investment than a method for short term gain. To buy a panel costs around $10,000 for a large high quality one. Even if you have a large electricity bill and your panel cuts this by 50% it will still be a few years before this pays for itself. This is why I highly recommend building your own panel. It costs around $500 to make a panel which will save you the same amount of money than if you brought an expensive one. You can also make a business out of making homemade solar panels which may bring you some additional income and peace of mind knowing you are helping save the environment.
